OOC: the human guide to Bajor (ongoing post)
As Nerys isn't well-schooled in much regarding Earth (she's not had a need for it before), a lot of her understanding is done via comparison with Bajoran concepts. While a lot of these are understandable through context, some fellow players may need further detail, and thus this ongoing list of references!
Please note that I will always try to find something either canon (on screen, e.g. via the Memory Alpha wiki) or book-canon (from licensed works, via the Memory Beta wiki) before creating something new, because I have a brain like a sieve and will otherwise forget what I've made up.
ANIMALS
batos: a domesticated herd mammal, often derided for being smelly, commonly farmed on Bajor pre and post Occupation.
krutu: a rodent-like mammal of small-to-medium size. [6I: Nerys used to catch and cook these for hard-times dinners in the Shakaar resistance cell.]
verdanis: a domesticated riding/mount animal, described by human observers as being somewhere between an ostrich and a horse. [6I: my interpretation of this is a long-necked and thin-legged horse with feathers and a beak.]
RELIGION
Kai: the head of the Bajoran religious faith. Though unofficially, the Kai also has quite a bit of indirect secular power. A human comparison might be the Pope, though without celibacy/gender restriction. Nerys and the current Kai, Winn Adami, do not get along.
Prophets: the divinities of the Bajoran religion, discovered by Benjamin Sisko (the Emissary) to be omniscient alien lifeforms with a non-linear understanding of time; they reside in the Celestial Temple (the Bajor system wormhole).
Vedek: a priestly leader of the Bajoran religious faith, having some indirect secular power and a voice in the Vedek Council. Think Archbishop, again, reaaaaally without celibacy. [6I: Nerys was informally dating Vedek Bareil Antos at the time she arrived, but seeing as she was happily flirting with Riker at that time too, and as Rhi thinks Bareil's a creeper, we may gloss over some of that.]
FOOD
hasperat: a very spicy main course consisting of vegetables picked in exceptionally spicy brine, then mixed with cooked grains (think rice or quinoa) and wrapped in flatbread. A good analogue might be a Korean burrito, just, uh, with only kimchi and rice for filling.
jumja stick: a widely-beloved sweet treat made from the congealed sap of the jumja tree. Canonically, Nerys isn't a fan as she finds them way too sweet for her liking. Rhi thinks it looks kinda like someone made a big yogurt smoothie and froze it on a stick, but with the congealed texture of Jello on the outside.
kava: a plant grown on Bajor for its edible fruit, roots, and nuts. Nerys likes kava root extract with coffee and kava root-flavoured rolls for breakfast. Kava fruit is used to make a blue-tinged cloudy juice and the infamous Bajoran springwine.
moba: a fruit; for 6I purposes, Rhi's canon is that it's similar in size to an Earth fig, with a rich pruney flavour.
