Kira Nerys: biographical dossier

Name: Kira Nerys.
(nb: Bajoran custom puts family name first; the character's first name is Nerys)

Canon: Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Scrubs Color: Black.

Visible Age: Late 20s.

Gender: Female.

Height: 1.72 meters (5'7").

Physique: Slim but physically fit.

Complexion: Towards the paler side of light skin tones.

Hygiene: Well-groomed whenever possible, but not precious about it--Nerys takes care of her appearance and will always try to be as clean as she can, but she isn't going to be upset if she can't wash her hair or have a full immersive wash due to the situation.

Hair: Dark brown pixie cut.

Eyes: Dark brown.

Defining Marks: Single pierced ear (her right). Assorted scars if she's unclothed, most of which are faded and none particularly remarkable.

Accent/Speech: Similar to New York City English, though less harsh and with more of a lilt.

Bearing/Demeanor: Nerys is as direct, upfront, and straightforward as her ruler straight posture. Some might find this brusque and overly proud, particularly if she has a point to get across, as she doesn't let go of a topic until she's done with it.

Gait: Nerys almost always walks quickly--the classic Star Trek corridor sort of pace--and with a purpose. As noted, her posture is stick straight, and she moves to conserve time and energy.

Habits: Prayer ritual in the mornings after getting up, followed by a regular period of exercise, e.g. jogging, aerobics, or shadowboxing. Similar prayer ritual after evening meal.
(nb: the player hasn't quite hammered out what the ritual looks like yet, as it's not directly canon, which is in some ways exceptionally vague on everyday Bajoran religious belief.)

Skills: From the app: Almost all of Nerys’ life has been under the edict of make do and mend, either as a child internee or a young adult Resistance fighter, so despite being from the tech-centric 24th century, she’s no stranger to hardship and survival living. While she has almost no knowledge of Earth-based flora/fauna, the general skills of hunting and gathering alongside making tools and shelter, are almost second-nature to her. When it comes to the specifics, she’s a quick learner who will absorb anything she needs to know and apply it as needed.

Living off the land or as a scavenger also means that she’s got a very good sense of how to leverage and manage time, energy, and individuals’ skills to make the best outcome of any situation. This has proven her well on DS9, where she’s shown herself a respected motivator and leader as the highest ranking Bajoran officer and the second in command of the station. She has no problem with teaching and sharing her knowledge, as she finds little gain in limiting others’ potential; and while she has strong opinions, she’s happy to listen to others, provided they make sense and are relatively morally upright.

History: Please see Memory Alpha, through the section 2370-2371. For those familiar, Nerys leaves canon during the events of 3x09, "Defiant".

Personality: From the app:

Nerys somehow manages to balance on the knife edge between passion and strategy, love and wariness, in all aspects of her life. Despite having been born and raised under Cardassian occupation, followed by over a decade of an even harder guerrilla soldiering, it’s a wonder that she’s managed to retain any sense of joy and wonder in life. Potentially this is partially due to her religious upbringing and faith in the Prophets, but it’s more than likely linked to her faith in herself and in her people—and these days, that includes the Federation team she works with. Nerys, when we first see her in 6I, has started to allow herself to have relationships and interests of her own—friendship with Dax, a romantic relationship with Bareil, camaraderie and respect with Sisko—she’s learning to live for herself as well as for a cause.

On that note, despite what she says about her days as a freedom fighter/terrorist, four years after the end of the occupation, Nerys is anything but a zealot. She is righteous as hell when she knows she’s right, and while her initial impulse in less certain situations is generally to go with her gut, she’s not unreasonable and will listen to a well-stated argument. Though she may storm off in a huff, she’s likely to return later with an apology once she’s thought the implications through.

Nerys wears her heart on her sleeve: if she doesn’t like you, you’ll know about it—and if she likes you, you’ll know about that, too. This makes her a shitty diplomat, as she’s utterly unable to put up a mask, and has more than once cost her in this new world of Bajoran and Federation political maneuvering. The epitome of this is found in her particularly sharp antagonism towards Kai Winn; Winn is effectively Nerys’ opposite, a conservative and narrow-minded person manipulating from the shadows, who cares more for the success of her platform than people as collateral damage. Nerys’ belief in people’s self-determination is probably as strong as her belief in the Prophets, and using others is anathema to her unless she is completely up against a wall.

Because really, for Nerys, it’s about getting everyone through the day, unhurt, safe, and free to live their lives. It’s what she’s been fighting for all along.

(to be made pretty at some nebulous point in the future)
